Citation:
COMMON GROUND: DUTCH - SOUTH AFRICAN ARCHITECTURAL EXCHANGES 1902-1961
The submission is a book entitled Common Ground, edited by Nicholas Clarke, Roger Fisher and Marieke Kuipers. Apart from the editors, who also authored chapters, there are contributions from 12 other authors and five sections labelled "Interlude". It was published in 2021 by LM Publishers of the Netherlands.
The subtitle of this book may be misleading. Dutch-South African Architectural Exchanges 1902-1961 describes mostly, as the abstract states, the contribution and influence of Dutch-born émigré architects on the South African built environment. Each chapter demonstrates a deep engagement with little-known archival material and historical facts from the first half of the twentieth century until South Africa became a republic. The fact that this period is at the cusp of coloniality and the rise of freedom movements is significant as it reveals substantial influences and divisions in the built environment.
The editors have extensive experience in producing influential books, while the contributing authors are, for the most, respected academics. All the chapters are well-researched, competently argued and written, and unquestionably original scholarly work. The authors present facts and archival material that has never - or at best, only marginally - been part of the discourse on architectural history. As such Common Ground significantly contributes to our knowledge and understanding of the Dutch contribution to the South African built environment. It is timeous and a worthy successor to Eclectic ZA Wilhelmiens: A shared Dutch built heritage in South Africa
A website (The Heritage Portal) describes the book as a brilliant and welcome addition to architectural literature. We concur with that statement.
