Also referred to by some sources as SCHNETLAGE. Snethlage was appointed First Class Supervisor of the Oost-Java-Spoorweg Maatschappij, later became director before becoming 'Hoofdingenieur' (Chief Engineer) for the NZASM. He arrived in the ZAR in April of 1887 as Chief Engineer of a team of five to start planning the route of the Eastern Line for NZASM. In November of that year they arrived in Komatipoort. Two of the team, JE VAN IJSENDIJK and DH VAN DER MEULEN, contracted malaria and died. Upon returning to the Netherlands he reported negatively on the chances of success of the venture and resigned his position. His successor was JL CLUYSENAER. He was subsequently appointed as Consul General and Technical Advisor to the ZAR DPW when back in Amsterdam and vetted steel bridge designs for the ZAR [Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek] as well as visiting the steelyards of the Harkort Factory in Duisberg, German to inspect preassembled steel bridge structures before they were dis-assembled and shipped to the Republiek.
