Lexicon South African Republic _____________________________________________________ The South African Republic (Dutch: Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, or ZAR), often informally known as the Transvaal Republic or Boer Republic, was an independent Boer-ruled country in Southern Africa during the second half of the 19th century. Not to be confused with the present-day Republic of South Africa, it occupied the area later known as the South African province of Transvaal. The ZAR was established in 1852, and was independent from 1856 to 1877, then again from 1881 to 1900. The Boer Republic was annexed in the South African War and after the Treaty of Vereeniging in 1902 became the Transvaal Colony, being given limited home rule in 1906. In 1910 it formed the Transvaal Province, one of the four provinces of the newly constituted state, the Union of South Africa. For a full history visit Wikipedia.
