Cook was apprenticed in the office of Foster & Wood in Bristol, England before coming to South Africa. He was in Cradock in the Cape Province by 1863, working as an architect and civil engineer. He advertised in The Cradock Register 24 July 1863) as having had 'twelve years practical experience in England.' He set up a successful practice in Port Elizabeth in 1870 and in 1873 became a sworn land surveyor and in 1879 entered into partnership with one SPINDLER becoming COOK, SPINDLER & Co (cf COOK & SPINDLER). Cook appears to have done moderately well in competitions, coming second in three: Uitenhage town hall (1880), in which his plans received two votes out of six; Bloemfontein town hall (1880) and the Wesleyan High School in Grahamstown (1881). He left for the Transvaal in about 1887 and died in Johannesburg in 1894.
