This building replaced the Opera House. It housed the Cape Town GPO for several decades, until the GPO moved to Cape Mail in Goodwood. The building was then converted to commercial use and renamed 'Grand Central'. The ground floor and basement are now shops, and the upper floors are offices. The former postal hall is now an indoor flea market, but the murals of Cape historical scenes and some of the period fittings have been retained. (Arthur Radburn, July 2023)

A 45m long bas relief in marble was done by René Shapshak.
