Click to view map Coordinates: | The building replaced the City's well known Central Hotel. It is speculated, but as yet unsubstantiated, that the building was designed much earlier by Stucke Harrison and Smail and construction delayed possibly due to the war. This is largely based on the similarities in the architectural style for earlier works by the practice, for example the Standard Bank Fox Street (1937) and The Mutual Building (1936) both in Johannesburg. (Gerald Humphrey, May 2021) The office building has been adaptively re-used as Student Accommodation by South Point and is now (2021) called 85 Govan Mbeki Avenue. (William Martinson, May 2021) |
