| | FORD, William HenryBorn: fl. 1908 Died: 1921Architect |
Nothing is yet known of Ford's training and he does not mention it in his application for RIBA Licentiate membership. He worked in the Cape Province, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal (Benoni) and designed a number church buildings for the Dutch Reformed Church including the outstanding church in Kroonstad in the Orange Free State. His earliest recorded building is the Dutch Reformed Church at Hanover in the Cape (1908). He was living in Kroonstad in 1912 was elected a Licentiate member of the RIBA, already being a member of the Cape Institute of Architects but moved to live in Frankfort, Orange Free State a few months later. By 1915 he was living in Cape Town and by 1915/1916 was listed in the RIBA Kalendar living in Frankfort again. In 1921 he designed the Dutch Reformed Church building in Benoni but after this date his career is obscure. Currently he is only recorded as a designer of church buildings. He may be the Ford who worked for KALLENBACH & KENNEDY. LRIBA 1912. (General dir of USA 1915; HSRC doc, Moerdyk bequest; LRIBA nom papers (1912) 1923; OFSPIA newsletter 10.1985:3 ill; RIBA Kal 1915/16; Van Niekerk 1950)All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
