The son of Wilfred Lloyd, a mine Manager, and Constance Mary Lloyd. He attended boarding schools in KwaZulu-Natal, from age nine. Matriculated age sixteen at Michaelhouse in 1952, remaining there a further year of post-matric study. This focused mainly on philosophy and art.

After graduation in July 1959, spent a year under Sike MARGOLES in the practice MARKOVITZ MARGOLES & PARTNERS. He then spent three years working in London, first for Michael Lyle and then Richard Sheppard Robson & Partners.

On return to South Africa in 1963, married to a sculptor and with two children he re-joined MARGOLES for a brief period before starting practicing on his own in 1964. From 1967 until 1969 practiced together with Colin FRASER, mainly on industrial design, and work in Swaziland (now Eswatini).

In 1970 he again re-joined MARGOLES as a partner in the firm GLUCKMAN, DE BEER, MARGOLES & PARTNERS returning to private practice in 1973.

In 1980 he was invited to join IRVINE-SMITH, JOUBERT & LENNARD as a partner. IRVINE-SMITH had retired in 1979, the name of the practice became IRVINE-SMITH, JOUBERT, LENNARD & LLOYD. In 1992, during a severe drop in work Henri JOUBERT and Don LENNARD retired from the practice and the firm changed the name to LLOYD ASSOCIATES ARCHITECTS & URBAN DESIGNERS of which Rod LLOYD is principal.
