Born in Bloemfontein, son of CWJ Sandrock. Educated at Kimberley Boys' High. Commenced practice as sole parner in 1953. In 1959 his address was Kerry Building, Vermeulen Street, Pretoria. (ISAA Yearbook, 1959)
Brian SANDROCK was invited to participate in the 50 year Anniversary of the University of Pretoria School of Architecture Alumni Exhibition held at the Pretoria Art Gallery on 7-25 July 1993. The following is a short biography which was published in the catalogue at the time.
Brian SANDROCK, gebore op 10 November 1925, bekwaam hom as argitek aan die Universiteit van Pretoria aan die einde van 1952, waarna hy nog 'n kort tydjie voortgaan in diens van die firma STUCKE & HARRISON. Op 6 Julie 1953 vestig hy sy eie praktyk BRIAN SANDROCK ARGITEKTE, waarvan hy enduit, tot sy dood op 20 Mei 1990, enkelprinsipaal bly. Gedurende die eerste jare vanaf 1954 to 1958 is hy ook dosent aan die Universiteit van Pretoria se skool vir argitektuur, eers in Geskiedenis en later in ontwerp. Hoewel hy daarna nie weer aan die skool verbonde was nie, het hy 'n onmiskenbare hand gehad aan die indiensopleiding van meer as twintig gevestigde argitekte.
In die lys van sy projekte duik talle van die name op wat by die uitvoering daarvan betrokke was. Hy het die kuns verstaan om die beste uit elkeen se vermoëns met sy eie saam te snoer sodat hulle as 'n gelukkige span gestreef het om die hoë ideale wat hy vir elke projek gekoester het te verwesenlik. Met sy goeie voorbeeld van sorgvuldige navorsing, toegewyde aandag en bo alles integriteit in sy benadering tot ontwerp en kontrak was SANDROCK se invloed inderdaad baie wyer as die talle opwindende geboue wat hy in sy leeftyd voltooi het.
As mens was hy 'n skugter introvert, maar geseën met n doelgerigtheid en waagmoed wat aan die avontuurlustigheid gegrens het. Hy was 'n talentvolle man van vele fasette wat tot uiting gekom het in sy verrassende innoverende oplossings oor die voile spektrum van die konstruksiewese, insluitende die meganiese aspekte daarvan. Voeg daarby sy fyn aanvoeling vir kontrakte en sy vermoë om sowel kliënte as konsultante op hulle tone te hou en jy kry die byna volmaakte argitek - 'n enigma!

Transcription of the STATEMENT made by Brian SANDROCK in Plan May 1969 pp 21-22:
We will not change the world by ourselves. Our work, as designers of the physical environment, lies more in the interpretation of needs and hopes than their actual making. Only through achieving some success in this, can currents be created in the opposite direction.
So it is a priority to assess our time, before becoming too involved in the finer nuances of our particular work.
We were born to electricity, airplanes and radio. The space age had already been anticipated in schoolboy reading. In spite of remarkable developments since, we cannot feel the same near-reverence for technology that so many of our elders did. How much more likely then, that younger generations may fail to recognize technology as the bountiful heritage it was thought to be – seeing rather in the trail of pollution and jarring human relations, a sphere in which the past has failed – one in which to seek new aspirations. However bizarre its manifestations and widespread its abuse and exploitation, this search exists around us.
Not that the lonely endeavours of science will not open wider doors that have been dreamed of, or that we do not require every technical muscle to shape the future – but that enthusiasm on the everyday plane of life cannot be sustained by the self-satisfaction of technology on its own.
Yet such thoughts are a facet of the obvious – whereas what we do is a fragment of life. And the achievement of truly needed things is a more elusive task than observation. Faced with a multitude of physical needs, it is perhaps logical to stretch resources thinly in every direction. But logic is not a balanced diet. A city with towers is as much in need as a place with highways and sanitation.
Only in the realisation of our essentially subjective nature can the true needs of our time be sensed – can we be attuned to meet them within the limits of our own particular work; and perhaps be fortunate in limited success.
There remains little to say. Design itself is not so much a philosophy, as the excitement of making things – with every challenge a great unshapen stone. It is best to begin chiseling – sooner or later clarity will come. Not an academic vision, but something shaping in the heat of involvement – often surprising – always demanding in its execution. For without a long breath and every available grain of know-how, the end could be a disaster.
And if we are to produce things, time will always be the whip – seldom allowing a glance behind – impatient with pre-occupation. So that having almost stumbled in keeping pace, and having skirted some deep pitfalls here and there, one can perhaps regard perfection without too much nostalgia.
Die gevaar bestaan dat omstandighede van die mans gebriuk sal maak om 'n eie weg te volg – dat ons onbewus, deur die praktiese oplossing van opvolgende probleme, 'n deel van dié proses sal uitmaak.
Selfs op die gebied van omgewingsontwerp sal die uitslag getuig of die mens, of die problem, die lieding geneem het. Ontwerp is afhanklik van 'n oorheesende denkrigting – nie die versamiling van oplossings nie.
Die fisiese omgewing stel ons nakend. Dus, terwyl die skepping van pleine en kultuursentra in ons stede die kultuurstrewe weerspieël, bewys die teenwoordigheid van aaklige kragsentrales en nywerheidsgebiede by die aantreded na die stad dat die kultuur nie deurgedring het nie.
Dit is nie 'n beskuldiging nie. Elke geslag sal sy eie taak ondek – en geeneen sal die tafel skoon laat nie. Maar dit is die erkenning van 'n taak wat met ons verdere ontwikkeling alhoemeer op die voorgrond sal tree.
Verbetering van die fisiese omgewing sal, oor die algemeen, nie sonder finansiële opoffering kan geskied nie. Die feit dat estetika somtyds met besparings verbeter kan word, getuig van swak oorspronklike ontwerp – dit is hoegenaamd nie 'n bewys dat ekonimie op sigself die estetiese veredel nie.
Die oplossing lê ook nie langs die relatief ooglopende weg van die funksionalisme nie. Die feit dat die funksionele somtyds inherente skoonheid toon dui op die moontelike versoenbaarheid daartussen en die estetika – dit dui beslis nie op hul vereenselwiging nie.
Nog buitengewoonheid, nog weelde is op sigself van enige estetiese betekenis. Wat ons soek is 'n werklike en diepliggende behoefte wat met die oortuiging van 'n omvattende begrip beantwoord word.
So 'n begrip is afhanklik van ‘n intuitiewe benadering – nie die suiwer objektiewe nie. Dit kan sy hoogpunt deur spanwerk bereik, maar slegs waneer die span uit ‘n nouverbonde en eendersienende groep bestaan. Dus hoe groter die omvang van die taak, hoe geringer die kanse van sukses. Hoe meer onafhanklik persone, liggame en instansies op die spel, hoe meer waarskynlik dat die eindresultaat die dowwe grys van onpersoonlikheid en laagste gemiddelde aanvaarbaarheid sal toon.
Soos by al ons ondernemings, lê die knoop nie soseer by die oplossing van tegniese probleme, of by die daarstelling van die nodige wetgewing en masjinerie nie, maar wel by die simpatieke hantering van daardie bykans onmeetbare spannings van die menslike persoonlikheid.
