Born: fl. 1876
Died: 1890

Occupied the post of clerk of works in the office of the Colonial Engineer (AH HIME) in Pietermaritzburg from about 1876 until 1890 (officially appointed in 1878 according to the Natal Blue Books 1880). According to Kearney (1973:56), Singleton 'was evidently very conversant with the colonial style ... the Asylum on Town Hill in Pietermaritzburg was ... the work of Singleton (who) had designed the original building in 1876'. Martin (1980:281) concurs that the original buildings were either by Jenkyns or Singleton or both, noting that PM DUDGEON had also claimed the building in his papers of application for Fellowship of the RIBA (1884), and that his hand should not be discounted. He is also said to be responsible for the design of the Girls'Model School in Loop Street, Pietermaritzburg. It is interesting to contrast this building with the later Longmarket St Girls' School by AE DAINTON.

One Alfred Amor Singleton died aged 73 on 21 Jul 1937; he had been employed as a clerk in the Dargle Post Office and died in Grey's Hospital, Pietermaritzburg (DE 25968/1937). There is, however, no evidence that this was the architect.
