Tollhouse
Colenso, KwaZulu-Natal

Alfred SINGLETON: Architect
Date:1879
Type:Tollhouse
Style:Colonial
Status:Extant

Singleton was evidently very conversant with the colonial style, for his design of the Colenso toll house, could be easily mistaken for a house in the early 'fifties. The Ladysmith correspondent of a Natal newspaper said that, "on the Colenso side (of the Tugela bridge) a fashionable looking Tollhouse has been built whose eyes look in every direstion". (Kearney 1973:56)

The building housing the museum is the Toll House which was erected in 1879 in the town of Colenso. The first man to occupy this quaint little building was W.R. Steward, the toll keeper. It was later converted into a Battle Museum and named after Dr. R.E. Stevenson, the military historian and former Director of Natal Hospital Services. The Museum is well worth visiting as there are many historical exhibits to be seen, including a model of the Battle of Colenso. (KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route, accessed December 2025)
