Karoo Style

_____________________________________________________

A style term coined to distinguish the C19 and early C20 vernacular of the Karoo, particularly of its platteland towns, where a Church, invariably Nederduits Gereformeerd (Dutch Reformed) dominates the urban landscape, composing streets of single- or double-storeyed dwellings of thick, white-washed walls, flat roofs, often verandahs directly flanking the street creating the idiom of the street-scape. [See also Cape Victorian].

For towns that epitomise this style see, for example:

Calvinia
Prince Albert
