Notes: Nongqawuse (spelt Nongqause on the grave) was a Xhosa girl born in the 1840s near the Gxarha River. She was an orphan, brought up by her uncle Mhlakaza. Her prophecies led to a millennialist movement that led to the cattle-killing crisis of 1856-1857 in the Eastern Cape. She died in 1898.
