Click to view large map Coordinates: | Young Women's Christian Association (PSB:108) This building replaced the First YWCA designed by A DE WITT in 1886. The building is a fine example of Parker's work and has a heavy cast-iron double-level verandah which is accessible from the first and second floors while the third floor is under a steeply pitched tiled roof. The two gable ends terminate in chimney stacks, each with three pots, a rare design in the City. Parker has used a wide range of ornamental devices to decorate the facade, all in the style of art nouveau. Four banded rectangular columns and two slim columns divide the face of the building into five bays. The columns in the centre flank a commemorative panel, the focal point of the building. It reads: In Memory of Minnie & Maria Bam, founded 1886, rebuilt 1903. (Walker 2012:88) The building has housed the Pan African Market since at least 2009 (Google street view).
