(SAAE&S Jnl Sep 1907:212) Young Women's Christian Association The original YWCA on this site in Long Street. It was the home of Johannes Andries Bam who donated his home to establish a YWCA after his two teenage daughters Minnie and Maria died of enteric in 1886, soon after arriving in Germany after sailing from Cape Town. Anthony de Witt designed the conversion of the Bams' house into the YWCA at the end of 1886. In 1903 this YWCA was demolished and Parker designed the new YWCA, now the Pan African Market.
