The foundation stone was laid in November 1879, and the first formal service took place on 26 January 1881. The west porch of the chapel designed by Herbert Baker was added in 1896, as a memorial to Bishops’ Archdeacons Henry Master White, the first principal, and John Hopkins Badnall, the first vice-principal. It was erected during the principalship of Archdeacon Brooke. When the War Memorial Chapel was opened in November 1926 the Brooke Chapel became a library. In 1985 it was re-dedicated as a chapel, for which it is still used today. The chapel was consecrated in October 2024. The final three stained-glass windows in the chapel were installed in 2024. Designed by Anika van der Merwe and dedicated to the late isiXhosa teacher Ms Xoliswa Christina Gwavu, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mrs Leah Tutu.
