OLD MAIN BUILDING
THIS BUILDING WAS DESIGNED BY CARL OTTO HAGER TO
PROVIDE ADEQUATE ACCOMMODATION FOR THE STELLENBOSCH
COLLEGE. THE FOUNDATION STONE WAS LAID ON 22
DECEMBER 1880. PART OF THE BUILDING WAS OCCUPIED ON
15 OCTOBER 1883 BUT THE COMPLETED BUILDING WAS ONLY
OFFICIALLY OPENED ON 6 NOVEMBER 1886 BY THE
ADMINISTRATOR OF THE CAPE PROVINCE, MAJOR GENERAL D'OYLEY
TORRENS. IN 1887 THE NAME OF THE STELLENBOSCH COLLEGE
WAS CHANGED TO THE VICTORIA COLLEGE. AFTER THE CONSTRUCTION
OF OTHER COLLEGE BUILDINGS THIS ONE WAS REFERRED TO AS
THE OLD MAIN BUILDING. IN 1964 THE SIDE-WINGS WERE
EXTENDED AND THE WESTERN WING ADDED.

Declared a National Monument in 1973, now a Provincial Heritage Site.
