When the town of Ficksburg was 30 years old, the need for a town hall arose. Donaldson was instructed by the town council to draw up plans for such a building. The building work began and on 1 July 1897 (according to the writing on the stone which is faded, (21 July according to the FAK) the foundation stone was laid by the chairman of the municipality, MI Fourie. Donaldson's name also appears on the foundation stone as ''contractor''.
