It has its origins in the Catholic mission founded in 1929 by the King Dominicans and it operated for many years from a single hall that served as a school in the week and a chapel on Sundays. The existing church was built in 1951, burned down in the riots of November 1952, reconstructed in 1954 and officially re-opened in 1956.
