Watermill at Kromrivier
Cederberg Conservancy, Clanwilliam district, Western Cape

Date:1890s
Client:Nieuwoudt
Type:Watermill
Style:Cape Vernacular : Industrial Archaeology
Status:Extant

Constructed by the German CJ Wagenaar (who had constructed several others such as the Groot Rivier Watermill), this one for the Nieuwoud Family who still own the farm. An overshot compass-type wheel typical of the area made of the then local Cape cedar wood, in operation until 1949.

Anecdotally, the last person to operate the mill was Ernst Nieuwoud who badly damaged his hand when cleaning the pulley which operated the alternator. In 2006 it was still standing but derelict.

This mill was under restoration in 2014 by the owner, Pip Nieuwoudt, the 7th generation Nieuwoudt on the farm, who remembers the water furrow being opened and closed to facilitate electricity which the mill generated in addition to its milling function (Len Raymond The Heritage Portal).
