Dalebrook House
St James, Western Cape

Herbert Thomas JONES: Architect

Date:1901
Type:Homestead
Status:Razed by fire

Herbert Jones designed the balcony. Unclear whether he also designed the main house.

Originally a guest house, Dalebrook House was Kalk Bay’s oldest hotel for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1918. Nearly 16 months later, on April 9, 1918, a petition was submitted to the Council to demolish the crumbling walls and verandah of the burned-out structure. Following the fire, J.W. Mills purchased the remains of Dalebrook House, and upon receiving the petition, the Council ordered him to immediately remove the hazardous walls and verandah. Mills then quickly sold the property to Thomas Wiersma, one of the petitioners, who combined the plot with adjacent properties he acquired from Tregidga and Mossop to construct Dalebrook Flats, later known as the Innisfail Hotel.

"After the Dalebrook House burnt to the ground, it was replaced a few years later by the Innisfail Hotel. It too proved to be a very popular destination among Rhodesian [Zimbabwean] families."
