JONES, Herbert Thomas

Architect

Was born in Kimberley where his father, Evan Hopkin Jones, was elected mayor for several terms. Jones was educated at the Educational Institute, Cape Town and articled to C FREEMAN in Cape Town in whose office he worked for some years after completion of articles. He toured England and the continent for six months before becoming chief assistant in TP Worthington & Son's office in Blackpool, Lancashire where he was responsible for the design of the Victoria Pier. In 1897 he returned to Cape Town where he set up practice on his own account in the same year, marrying in 1899. Jones appears to have been in demand as a church architect both before his stay in England and on his return to South Africa.

In 1901 FMR DRAIBY joined Jones as an assistant and in 1903 the partnership of JONES & DRAIBY was set up (cf JONES & DRAIBY) in Cape Town. In 1905 they opened an office in Johannesburg which Draiby ran, Jones remaining in Cape Town. In 1927 Jones visited London in connection with his commission for the Sun Insurance Company building in Cape Town. At some point, probably in 1928, he entered into partnership with M ADAMS in Cape Town (cf JONES & ADAMS), the partnership was dissolved in December 1932 and in 1933 Jones entered into partnership with RFR DAY (cf. JONES & DAY) in Cape Town, the partnership lasting until Jones retired.

Some of Jones's drawings survive in the University of Cape Town Manuscripts and Archives Library in the Day & De Wet Gift. He was a fine draughtsman. Jones died at his home Furthermoor at 10 Southway in Pinelands, Cape Town. He had married Mary Emma Walker and they had three children.
