Click to view large map Coordinates: | The bank building, which includes the bank manager's residence at the back, was built in 1906. In 1893 a branch of De Nationale Bank der Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek Beperkt opened at Pilgrim's Rest. After the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902), the name of the banking group changed to the National Bank of South Africa Limited. The bank amalgamated with the Colonial Bank and the Anglo-Egyptian Bank in 1925 to form Barclays Bank (Dominium, Colonial & Overseas). Barclays International restructured in 1971 and the South African Branch's name changed to Barclays National Bank. In the 1980s Barclays International withdrew from South Africa and the banking group's name changed to First National Bank. First National Bank closed the bank agency at Pilgrim's Rest in 2007. The original Bank Manager's residence, at the back of the bank, is currently being used as an annex to the Royal Hotel. (Rene Reinders. 2016:Item 44. Submitted by Annelise Lange) References:
