Cape Argus Building
Cape Town, Western Cape

Date:n.d.
Type:Offices
Status:Demolished c1968
Street:Longmarket Street

This was the original building for the Cape Argus on this site, who eventually occupied most of the city block (with the exception of the Burgher Watch House and the two buildings on the corner of St Georges Street and Longmarket Street, which were built by the United Building Society).

It was demolished in c1968 together with the adjacent Tavern Hotel (formerly Ye Old Thatched Tavern) and was replaced by the final wing of the Argus building. The Cape Dutch Revival style of the earlier wing to Burg St (refer entry Argus Co bldg, Cape Town) was repeated in this phase and created a continuous backdrop to The Old Town House.
