The building was built for the Eastern Province Herald Newspaper (In November 2001 it became simply "The Herald") They later also produced the Evening Standard and Weekend Post. An Annex was built adjacent to the building at no19 Baakens Street in 1952 by the architect Harry Pullen. The Newspaper vacated both buildings in April 2019 for new premises in Greenarces. The buildings are currently still vacant (2021) (Gerald Humphrey, May 2021)
