First Woolworths store was opened by Max Sonnenberg (assisted by his son Richard and by FH Kossuth) on 30 October 1931 in the former dining room of the Royal Hotel in Cape Town. It was unconnected with the Woolworths of other countries. Thereafter they purchased the adjoining site and built a new store that included offices and storage space. Woolworths moved to these new premises in c1936. In 1946, after WWII, they opened five new stores in Cape Town. (Submitted by Paul VAN DER MERWE)
