| First Woolworths store was opened by Max Sonnenberg (assisted by his son Richard and by FH Kossuth) on 30 October 1931 in the former dining room of the Royal Hotel in Cape Town. It was unconnected with the Woolworths of other countries. They purchased the adjoining site and built a new store that included offices and storage space. In 1946, after WWII, they opened 5 new stores in Cape Town. (Submitted by Paul VAN DER MERWE) Books that reference Woolworths
