Born in Cape Town of Dutch immigrant family Paulus Johannes Cornelius HOFMAN and Jannetje van der Poppe (1870-1943) while returning to the Netherlands from the ZAR after the start of hostilities of the Anglo-Boer War. It is presumed that he arrived with his father in 1903 on his return to the Transvaal Colony in 1903. In about 1927 Hofman entered into partnership with his father, PJC HOFMAN c1928 (cf HOFMAN & HOFMAN). The partnership ended in about 1926 after which JA Hofman practised on his own account in Pretoria. In 1959 and again in 1969 he is recorded as of address Permanent Buildings, Paul Kruger Street, Pretoria. Submitted an entry for the Competition for the new Prime Minister's Residence - unplaced.
