Initially Transvaal Provincial Administration, Architect rural Division. A Division set up in the Transvaal Provincial Administration for executing and supervising provincial projects, newly established as an architectural section under JB DEY in 1936 with ABBOTT as Assistant Chief Architect. In 1948 NEWHAM left the DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS and was appointed Transvaal Provincial Architect, a post he held until his retirement in 1954. In about 1961, after the formation of the Republic, it became the Works Department, the prime function of which was to provide services to other Departments and sections of the Administration. It was responsible for the planning, erection and maintenance of, inter alia, the following building types and structures: Office buildingsHospitals (including training hospitals and nurses'homes) Training colleges for nurses Schools Hostels Colleges of Education Libraries Theatre complexes Recreational facilities Infrastructure including sewage disposal works and storm-water drainage.
