ZONNEVELD, Giel

Of Schiedam, Holland. Emigrated 1890. He taught at the Staatsmodelschool, Pretoria in 1893. In 1897 he joined the DEPARTEMENT PUBLIEKE WERKEN of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek as a 2nd clerk (Schoeman, 2011: 209), and is listed in the Longland's Directory of 1899 as 1st clerk. Married Maartje Ida de Bruyn (b 1869 10 15 Haarlemmermeer d 1964 06 12 Pretoria) in 1897 07 28 by whom he had four children. (Ploeger & de Kock, 1989: 240). Appeared in an 1897 group photograph of the staff of the ZAR PWD. He is recorded in the papers of WIJERS (Ploeger, 1954: 17) as serving in the Ordinance Section of the Hollander Corps under VAN RIJSSE.
