Was born in Cape Town, a member of the well-known Cape Town De Smidt family. It is not yet known where he was educated but he matriculated in 1918 and was articled to PARKER & FORSYTH in Cape Town for three years. He also attended classes at the local School of Art (the Michaelis?) and classes given by the Cape Institute of Architects in architecture and building subjects. He subsequently attended the University of Cape Town. From 1922 to 1924 he was an assistant to WALGATE & ELSWORTH and from 1924 to 1925 was employed by KENDALL & MORRIS; he became chief assistant to Morris on the Reserve Bank (1926-1929) in Cape Town. He left South Africa (circa 1934) to study at the Architectural Association in London, travelling in Europe during this period and passing the RIBA qualifying examination in 1935. He was elected an Associate member of the RIBA in 1937. J Morris signed his declaration papers, commenting that he was 'well-trained, thorough and sound'. He worked in association with DAY and DE WET (n.d.) and won the Cape Provincial Institute of Architects Bronze Medal in collaboration with them in 1940.
