UPTON, Francis

Architect


Was born in England, the son of RS Upton. He probably came to Natal with his father in 1850. He married Anna Maria Hulme in Stamford Hill, Durban in 1862. Upton practised as a government surveyor and architect in Pietermaritzburg from about 1881 until 1906. He was in partnership with Edward HARRISON for a year (1885 to 1886) in Pietermaritzburg (cf UPTON & HARRISON), who married Upton's daughter Emily. In about 1892 he entered into partnership with W TOMLINSON in Pietermaritzburg, the partnership lasting until 1895 (cf UPTON & TOMLINSON). His son Prescot Upton, who was the general manager of the City & Suburban Gold Mining Company in Johannesburg at the time, acted as his father's executor in 1907. On his death, Upton left his 'business, books, pictures, plates, plans and drawings' to his son Alfred William Upton. He died at his home, 287 Loop St, Pietermaritzburg. Founder member of the Natal Institute of Architects 1901.
