| | BRUNSKILL, John StephenBorn: Fl. 1880 Died: 1896Architect |
Nothing is yet established concerning Brunskill's origins and training. He worked in Durban from 1880 to 1896 and was invited into partnership with WH PASSMORE in 1880 (cf. PASSMORE & BRUNSKILL). In 1886 he left for Barberton, participating in the gold rush there. He is known to have designed two buildings, he won the competition which included the design of both, in Pietermaritzburg: the original Police Station (now Pietermaritzburg Tourism) and the Market Hall. Kearney points out Brunskill's lack of skill in solving the relationship of tower of the Police Station with the rest of the building but praises the open, well-lit Market Building, unfortunately demolished in 1970, and contrasts Brunskill with PM DUDGEON, working in Durban at that time. Nothing further is currently known of Brunskill.
