| | MacKENZIE, John FraserBorn: ? Died: 1949 06Architect |
His name is also found spelt McKENZIE (CSL, ORC 1907). MacKENZIE was employed by the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of the Orange River Colony from 1904; it is not yet clear when he transferred to the Transvaal. While he was in Bloemfontein he met JC COOK with whom he entered a design for the Pretoria Post Office competition in 1908 (Mackenzie's address at the time being in Boksburg where he was listed in partnership with Cook) and submitted a further design in the competition under his name alone. The Cape Times (March 1911) noted that the new Pretoria post office building was erected to the plans of 'COOK & MacKENZIE' and according to the elevations of TULLY, WATERS & CLELAND. Mackenzie and Cook were listed with different post box numbers in Boksburg in the United Transvaal Directory (1915, 1917). When Mackenzie registered as a member of the Institute of South African Architects in 1927 he was working for the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Cape Town. By 1931-1932 he was listed an absentee salaried member of the Institute of South African Architects working in Kenya. ISAA 1927.
