World War II Fortifications

Built during the years 1939-1944 these fortifications occur only along the South African coastline in the form of concrete bunkers used as lookouts to guard the only shipping route (with the Suez Channel closed) to the east. Of special mention is their role in spotting Nazi U-boat submarines. (E.g. Mount Tabor near St. Lucia, Kwa-Zulu Natal; Houtbay Battery, Western Cape.)
