Phragmites australis, (previously Phragmites communis). A plant with world-wide distribution, known in South Africa by the name for its use by local children who use its culms for producing reed flutes. It is extensively used for matting (see Matjieshuis), as walling, particularly in hot arid regions within reach of the Gariep (Orange) River, and included in the weave (or 'wattling') of Wattle-and-daub construction.
