| Lexicon Saligna _____________________________________________________ Saligna is the eucalypt,Eucalyptus grandis, endemic to Australia, from Newcastle in New South Wales northwards to west of Daintree in Queensland (see Wikipedia). It takes its name from the eucalypt, Eucalyptus saligna (bluegum/ bloekom), with which it was once confused. However the term 'saligna' has stuck and is the name under which the timber is locally traded in South Africa. Saligna wood is a versatile South African-grown hardwood known for its straight grain and yellow to pale red or brownish colour. It is moderately durable and easy to work with, taking finishes well, though it requires careful drying and can be prone to splitting when cut across the grain. Its coppice is used for poles, mining timber, boxwood and paper pulp. Mature trees are commonly used for decking, furniture, doors,floor-boards, parquet flooring blocks and strips (SESA Vol 4 1971:396b). Books linked to this entry
