Karri

The timber wood, karri, is of the tree Eucalypt, Eucalyptus diversicolor, endemic to southwest Western Australia, The name karri" originaing from the native name for the tree. The reddish-pink timber is known for its high strength, stiffness, and durability, making it suitable for flooring, heavy carpentry, and furniture. It is difficult to work with due to a high blunting effect on tools (see Wikipedia).
With the development of the forestry industry in South Africa it was found a suitable cultivar for the uniform rainfall region of the Western Cape and grown to the virtual exclusion of all others. It yields an excellent timber and is in keen demand for tool handles (SESA Vol 4 1971:396b).
