Mining Towns


These towns consisted of any array of structures from tents, and shanties to prefabricated structures imported and brought to the gold and diamond fields by ox wagon and later by rail. Towns evolved haphazardly eventually coming to naught (Barberton and Pilgrim's Rest) or booming (Johannesburg and Kimberley). The varying wealth of the inhabitants as well as their different origins caused these towns to be vary in every aspect of their appearance.
