Iron age settlements are mostly based on central cattle pens surrounded by circular dwellings (huts). Many variations occur and dwellings have had a variety of forms from corbelled stone huts to mud-walled thatched roofed huts. Large cities with complex social structuring patterns were common based on cattle based economy. Grain bins occur. Notable examples include Mapungupwe, Broederstroom and Makwareng.
