Brandsolder

_____________________________________________________

Afrikaans. Dutch (brandzolder) literally "fire ceiling" ["fire loft or attic"]. A thick layer of clay or raw bricks covering a reed, sparretjie or board ceiling. Should the thatch catch alight, the brandzolder prevents the burning thatch from passing to the rooms beneath. It also forms the floor of a loft.
