Notes: Part of the history of Wakkerstroom may be seen in its Historical cemetery which today covers graves from the first settlers and founders of the town to modern day residents as well as the graves of British soldiers killed in action in the area during the First and Second Boer wars. Apart from the historical significance and beauty of the cemetery, of special interest is the tablet between the graves which records that Swart Dirk Uys [Voortrekker and founder of Wakkerstroom] used a “riem” cut from the hide of an eland to survey the town. In the same section is a granite memorial to 18 British soldiers killed in action during the Transvaal War of Independence in 1880/1881, which followed the British Annexation of 1877. In the upper block is the granite stele commemorating British and Imperial soldiers killed in action during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. This memorial, together with the one in this historic section, is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. (Wakkerstroom, accessed 2023 12 29) |
