The original plans are dated 1898 but due to the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War, the Post Office was only completed in 1905, when it was unveiled by JF Brown, the Post Master General. (Richardson 2001:190)

The post office closed in 1965. The building was declared a National Monument in August 1996 and is now a Provincial Heritage Site.
