| The magnificent building here shown, given as a companion to the last picture, affords another contrast between the "then and now". The entrance hall, in the centre of the block, leads into a most imposing lobby of great size and height, from which numerous swinging glass doors communicate with the spacious banking hall. This, though not originally built for the purpose, has been splendidly adapted and fitted up. It has every modern convenience in the way of electric bells, speaking tubes, etc,; an Assay Department for testing and smelting gold and ores, with a wondrous complement of furnaces, chemicals, and weighing machines, considered to be the finest in South Africa.
