This went out on competition and Thomas Edward COLLCUTT, then President of RIBA was the assessor. The foundation stone was laid on 29 Aug 1907.

The original name, Transvaal University College, changed to School of Mining and Technology after 1910. Extensions were done in 1938.

In 1923 this became the Witwatersrand Technical College (Wits Technikon) and then in 2005 it was merged with the Rand Afrikaans University to become the University of Johannesburg.
