Valley Road Houses
Westcliff, Johannesburg, Gauteng

studioMAS: Architect
Date:2004
Type:Homestead
Status:Extant

Two free-standing residential houses.

These houses experiment with new architectural typologies specific to the South African climate, where the word ‘climate’ encompasses physical, social and economic aspects. They are also our first courtyard houses. They respond to the moods of their inhabitants and allow them to be introspective and shut off from the world, or when socialising, open and accessible. As with most houses designed by our hand, the kitchens and private internal courtyards form the heart of the house.
