Award of Merit Citation

It is pleasing to discover that, while some home-grown companies look abroad for their architects, those foreigners who choose South African shores as their home, are equally comfortable in appointing home-grown talent as their designers. The clients have European honed taste but have adapted this to the relaxed life-style offered by the South African climate, and the brief has allowed for the expression of this informality. The consequence is a planning which follows directly from the contours of the site, and a generous space distribution which maximises the opportunities of a directly north-orientated site. The sectional profile of the building echoes that of the site, and material choice is suitably natural and neutral so as to create an unobtrusive building which recedes into its setting. The palette of materials is limited and melded with impeccable detailing. Site and landscape are re-integrated as part of the built environment and the clients are active in rehabilitating the adjacent piece of public land, a commendable endeavour. The project is given a national award of merit.
