Award of Merit Citation

The project, while limited in scale, is important in that it occupies an area within the eye of the international public. The design is a robust and unsentimental response to site, treated as landscape objects while reminiscent of the industrial archaeology of the associated naval harbour. It challenges our traditional ideas of the architectural aesthetic, yet is directly functional and uncompromising in its resolution. There are, within a limited repertoire of parts and selection of materials, many lessons to be learnt. The distance and disjunction of the related parts creates a palpable tension, elegantly resolved as the visitor completes the journey. The panel unreservedly makes a national award of merit to this project.
