The Belmont Hotel was built in the late 1920s by Pretoria businessman Mr. William Linklater (1864-1942). It was a grand structure situated at the corner of Church Street (now Stanza Bopape Street) and Nel Street (now Zeederberg Street). Designed by architect Joseph Lockwood Hall, the hotel cost £13,000 to construct, and Mr. Linklater and his wife managed its operations. Over time, the business flourished, and an annex was built on Nel Street to accommodate the growing demand. However, after Mr. Linklater’s passing in the 1940s, his family sold the property to the government in 1954. The building went through various transformations, becoming a Nurses Home in the 1960s and later serving as the “Journey Service” for the Transvaal Education Department. By 1979, the property was repurposed for use by the Navy.
