Hugh Aitken Hutchinson WALKER: Architect 1935

Date:n.d. : 1935
Style:Classical Revival
Street:135 and 137 Lower Main Rd

Alterations were done in 1935. There is no record at this stage as to when the building was first erected and who the architect was. If you have any information please let us know. The building was brought to our attention by Russell Taylor who kindly supplied the photo of the alteration plans. (Ed)

This building is currently [2019] registered to owner PACIFIC BLAZE INV 120 C C and operates as the Obviously Armchair Backpackers and Pub. The only references I can find as to when it changed hands is in 1999 it operated as the Obviously Armchair Theatre.

Some interesting history obtained from the Surveyor General's website is that it was Lot C of the property transferred to H.H.Jones and marked 76-91 Bellevliet Estate. Now held by H. Donnen by deed of transfer 6th April 1892. The diagram is dated October 1893.

This building is graded as a 3C, architectural style – Victorian, and forms part of the early development of Observatory Main Road as a commercial street. I can't find a year or architect, only reference to it being early 20th Century. I'm not sure if this street was initially called Main Road and later became Lower Main Road, or whether the reference is incorrect.

The 1944 – 1966 City Survey overlay indicates it was still a bank then.
